Working with diluted gouache and pencil, each image works alongside a specific section of the book. I chose a limited colour palette for these pieces to bring the time period, setting and atmosphere of the writing to life, and to tie the works together.
The third image stands out from the other three: a landscape artwork in comparison to the three portraits and a dreamlike composition in contrast to the literal. This actualises Winterson's description of a traumatic moment in the novel and works as a representation of the protagonist's anguish and delirium.
